Ethereum’s Proposed Hard Fork ‘Muir Glacier’ Would Delay Impending Ice Age

Ethereum developers have proposed a tricky fork, named Muir Glacier, that should deal with the impending Ice Age, which could bring about a major slowdown on the Ethereum mainnet.

In an Ethereum improvement proposal at the end of November, Ethereum developer James Hancock wrote that the proposed Ethereum Muir Glacier really hard fork would thrust back again the system, identified as Ice Age.

Ice Age is unnecessarily complex and baffling

Ethereum’s Ice Age, also recognised as Difficulty Bomb, refers to the increasing hashing problem in the mining algorithm employed to reward miners with Ether (ETH) on its blockchain. This piece of coding artificially slows down the output of blocks on Ethereum’s blockchain and thus functions as a deterrent for miners who may pick to proceed with evidence of function (PoW) even immediately after Ethereum has transitioned to evidence of stake (PoS).

Having said that, in accordance to Hancock the current implementation of Ice Age is unnecessarily complex and complicated to talk to the group. He adds that any updates to the design and style need to be able to model the impact on the community in a straightforward way that is easy to predict when it occurs. Currently, Hancock does not believe this is the scenario.

Hancock further details out that Ethereum’s future tough fork would drive back the system “as significantly as is fair,” to give builders the time to make a decision irrespective of whether to update Ice Age so that its conduct gets predictable or to eliminate it solely. He additional:

“This fork would give us time to tackle the neighborhood to have an understanding of their priorities improved as much as the intentions of the Ice Age, and give time for proposals for much better mechanisms to accomplish people objectives.”

ETH block propagation at the very least 2 times as quickly

In November, blockchain advisory and product growth agency Akomba Labs conducted a check on the Ethereum community that showed it could make block propagation at minimum 2 times as fast. Examination results confirmed that the common block propagation effectiveness dropped from 360 milliseconds with out jogging BloXroute’s Blockchain Distribution Community to 172 milliseconds with it.
